Ottchil cured paper vase with glass cylinder insert.

Jitaechilgi is a Korean traditional craft that is a combination of Ottchil and Hanji

  • Ottchil - a type of Korean traditional natural varnish that has a high level of resistance to water and decomposition

  • Hanji - a Korean traditional paper that is made out of the inner bark of Korean paper mulberry tree

Due to the fact that it becomes water-resistant and very stiff when ottchil is applied on Hanji paper, it has provided the ancestors with a vast array of applications for necessities in everyday life as an eco-friendly, natural material.

Although Jitaechilgi practices are now mostly disappeared and are rarely seen nowadays, maker Nam Gwon Lyu has preserved this precious technique with his desire to create objects that are beautiful and practical, blending traditional s with modern technology and aesthetics.

Jitaechilgi vases are available in 3 shades, aged brown, soil brown, charcoal

Nam Gwon Lyu

The maker Nam Gwon Lyu has trained under master ottchil craftsman, Kang Young Park, who has acknowledged it as an intangible cultural heritage. While he has been p the traditional way of ottchil, he has been also developing his own contemporary works by applying ottchil technique to different materials.
